A regulated market
Online gambling in Ontario became a regulated market on April 4, 2022. When private operators offer it, iGaming Ontario conducts and manages that gambling. Regulation is the AGCO's job. Ontario law accepts a private online casino only once the AGCO registers it and while it keeps an iGaming Ontario operating agreement. Without one of the two, the site is not legal in Ontario.
Alongside the private operators sits a public one. OLG.ca is Ontario's government-run online casino. For readers at the Lakehead, from Marathon in the east to Kenora in the west, the framework is the same. A familiar logo or a Canadian mailing address on a site proves neither of the two requirements.
Checking a site before play
Just one official list names the regulated online gambling sites: the iGaming Ontario directory, at igamingontario.ca. Online play is open only to those 19+ who are physically in Ontario at the time. That last rule matters at the Lakehead. Duluth, Minnesota, lies 283 km southwest in a straight line. Once a player crosses into Minnesota, Ontario online play is no longer allowed.
Through BetGuard (betguard.ca), a service of iGaming Ontario, anyone 19 or older can bar themselves from all regulated Ontario online sites in one step. It covers OLG.ca as well. Land-based casinos are outside it. Casinos on land fall under a different program, OLG's My PlayBreak, whose casino breaks run between 1 and 5 years or last 3 or 6 months. Each break reaches all Ontario casinos, and ending it early is not possible.
How this guide is paid
Across this guide, paid links turn up on a single page, the home page, and nowhere else. Three appear there, each tagged Ad: in the menu, beneath the first screen and toward the bottom. Their destination is an online casino partner, a private one, which goes unnamed here and may be replaced. A commission goes to the guide from those links.
Earning a commission does not mean endorsing, and the desk promises nothing about the partner. Readers should hold any online casino, the partner included, up to the official directory set out above. No tie exists between the partner and the venue covered here. No payment is ever attached to links pointing to the venue's own site, the provincial lottery corporation, the province or help services.
The Lakehead desk and the pictures
The Lakehead desk writes this guide under a shared name, with no personal byline. Every picture on the site looks like a photograph and was produced with an image generator. Two were generated from real photographs of Gateway Casinos Thunder Bay: the entrance corner with its stone tower and wave canopy, and red-lit slot machines in a row. The other three depict no specific place: a granite shore at dusk, a highway through rock cuts, a night parking lot. That lot is not the casino's, and nobody is shown in any of the five.
Questions from the road
IHow does a reader confirm that an online casino operates legally in Ontario?
One official list names Ontario's regulated online gambling sites: the iGaming Ontario directory at igamingontario.ca. Any private site not found there stands outside the province's regulated market.
IICan someone from Thunder Bay keep playing during a trip to Minnesota?
No, playing online under Ontario rules is permitted only when the player is physically in Ontario. Players must also be 19 or older. Crossing into Minnesota ends that permission.
IIIDoes BetGuard cover the casino in Thunder Bay?
No, BetGuard bars a person from Ontario's regulated online gambling sites all at once, yet it does not extend to land-based casinos. The casino on Cumberland St. South falls instead under My PlayBreak, the OLG self-exclusion program covering Ontario casinos. To enrol, a person phones 1-800-387-0098 for the OLG Support Centre or speaks with staff at a casino.
